Now Listen Here: The Life and Times of Bill Jardine
A Fascinating Book About Life in Africa
Fietas was not a place Bill Jardine had always wanted to run away from. In fact, like its thousands of other inhabitants, Jardine loved this tiny bustling South African township with its Chinese corner shops that sold konfyt and tameletjie; its churches and mosques; its koeksisters on a Sunday morning, sold by Muslim mothers and enjoyed with coffee; its bullies and gangs. Bill loved his life in Africa, its home-grown street games, blik-I-spy and kennekie; its street brawls and illicit liquor, skokiaan at Rooi jaart and China Brandy at the Chinese bucket shops; it’s gambling (pakkapues, fah-fee, and beans); its special brand of humour and dancing in the streets; and its alleys and yards awash with rivulets of Jeyes Fluid-scented sewage. If you want to learn more about life in the South African township of Fiestas, this book is a must-read.
