Punu masks originate in Gabon, from the Punu people who reside along the upper Ngoumie river, and represent the spirit of the ancestors. Today, Punu masks are used to entertain audiences during festivals or celebrations, although they are still used during ritual functions on rare occasions. Some of these masks have a natural wood color and are believed to have a judiciary function, often being used by chiefs to consult with the ancestors and find solutions for problems.
